Working as a qualified paramedic

You can apply to become a qualified paramedic if you’ve worked as one for more than 2 years and meet the criteria below. In this role, you’ll practise as an advanced care paramedic at a senior level (ACP2, Band 2).

We employ qualified paramedics in QAS regions right across Queensland.

Before you apply

Before you apply, check you’re eligible for the role. You’ll need to show evidence that you meet the following criteria in your application or expression of interest.

You can legally work in Australia

You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen to apply. You can also apply if you have a valid permanent work visa.

We don’t sponsor overseas workers and can’t give you advice about visas. You can learn more about working in Australia on the Department of Home Affairs website.

You have more than 2 years of work experience as a paramedic

Your work experience includes any graduate programs you’ve done. If you have less than 2 years experience, you can apply for our graduate paramedic program.

You have a paramedicine degree

You need one of the following qualifications, or an equivalent qualification to work as a paramedic.

  • Bachelor of Paramedicine
  • Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic)
  • Associate Diploma of Applied Science (Ambulance).

You’re a registered paramedic with Ahpra

You’ll need to upload proof of your paramedic registration with Ahpra, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

You can drive a light rigid manual motor vehicle in Queensland

All our paramedics need a Queensland LR Light Rigid open manual driver licence. You can still apply if you have one of the following licenses, but you’ll need an LR licence before you start work.

  • Queensland C Car open licence for a manual motor vehicle
  • equivalent manual licence from another state or country

If your licence only permits you to drive an automatic vehicle, you won’t be able to apply.

After you apply

We’ll meet you for an interview if your application is successful. As part of the recruitment process we may also do checks for your:

  • professional registrations, and qualifications
  • past clinical practice, including any disciplinary actions
  • criminal history
  • working with children clearance (blue card).
