Patient Transport Officer

Patient Transport Officers provide non-acute patient transport services for the Queensland Ambulance Service.

Locations for Patient Transport Officer positions vary throughout the state, depending on the workload of a particular station. In most regions positions will be assigned to high population areas, these include:

What is the minimum qualification that I will be assessed against under the EOQ process?

For the Equivalence of Qualification process, you will be assessed against the minimum requirements of a Patient Transport Officer –Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport.


What are the primary objectives of a Patient Transport Officer?

The primary objective of the Patient Transport Officer is the provision of non-emergency patient transport within the Queensland Ambulance Service.

(Note: The Patient Transport Officer will not fill positions on Paramedic or Qualified Ambulance Officer (QAO) rosters or undertake pre-hospital emergency care responsibilities of a QAO).


What are the key accountabilities of a Patient Transport Officer?

Provide basic care (including the use of some specialised ambulance equipment and basic clinical procedures) and specialised transport for non-emergency patients and other duties as prescribed by the Commissioner.

Comply with the QueenslandAmbulance Service Act 1991, all Queensland Ambulance Service policies and procedures and the relevant Industrial Award and agreements.

Maintain a professional approach towards service delivery such as accurate recording of all documentation, ensuring the operational readiness of all equipment and vehicles within their area of responsibility.

Have an awareness and understanding of Human Resource Management practices including Equal Employment Opportunity, Occupational Health and Safety etc.

Undertake and accept responsibility for the maintenance of competencies pertaining to the position as per QAS protocols and standards.

Have an appreciation of the needs of various client groups including but not limited to the aged, people from diverse cultural background, or with disabilities.

The EOQ moderation panel will be assessing your qualifications against the Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport.

What is the minimum experience required to be a Patient Transport Officer with the QAS?

It is expected that applicants hold a minimum of 12 months experience as a Patient Transport Officer, full-time in an appropriate emergency services environment.

What if I haven’t worked in the Pre-Hospital Care environment for more than twelve months?

You must be able to demonstrate clinical currency (within the 12 months prior to date of application) to the prescribed criteria of a Patient Transport Officer. If you are unable to provide evidence to support your currency, you will be required to coordinate a “Skills Assessment Report” by an authorised assessor / educator. This may be completed through your current/past employer. In some cases an assessment may be coordinated through an appropriate Regional Staff Development Unit (QAS). – For applicants who reside in QLD you will need to arrange this assessment. The EOQ Panel will provide advice on this process.
