Northern Region
The Northern Region is one of the largest and most varied regions in the state. The Region is serviced by 22 permanent ambulance stations, seven hospital based ambulance services and two First Responder Groups. The Region extends along Queensland’s east coast from Halifax in the north, through Townsville, the Regions major centre to Bowen in the south, west to the Northern Territory border, north to the Gulf of Carpentaria and south to the South Australian border (Poeppel Corner). The Region covers approximately 640,000 square kilometres. It includes the major centre of Townsville, the mining centre of Mount Isa, and several remote, indigenous and island communities. The Region also serves rural communities involved in sugar, small crops and livestock.
The Region’s population is approximately 300,000 people, with the majority of the population being based in the coastal area in Townsville. The Region includes several Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities, and much work is being done by the Queensland Ambulance Service and other Departments to increase service delivery within those communities. Permanent ambulance stations have been established in the communities of Palm Island, Doomadgee and Mornington Island.
Townsville is the Queensland Health tertiary referral centre for North Queensland. The Region plays an active role in the Queensland Emergency Medical System (QEMS), with involvement in numerous retrievals and primary response tasks with the Townsville Hospital, Queensland Helicopter Rescue Service and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Appropriately qualified officers from Townsville, respond to retrievals on the Queensland rescue helicopter.

Local Ambulance Committees
The Queensland Ambulance Service is a community based, client focused organisation. Since 1991 Local Ambulance Committees (LACs) were formed to ensure the ambulance service stays in touch with the people it serves. LACs are made up of volunteer members who provide feedback to the Region on its performance and on community issues relating to ambulance services in the Region. LACs manage funds that they raise locally and ensure those funds remain in the community and benefit the local ambulance service.
