Development Grants
The Foundation provides grants on an annual basis in the following categories:
Dr Peter Stephenson Overseas Study Grant - $5,000
In 2010 a new grant was offered for overseas study. This grant has been established in recognition of the professional clinical care rendered by QAS to Dr Peter Stephenson, a Brisbane medical specialist who was seriously injured in a farming accident.
In support of the Foundation Dr Peter Stephenson has provided a grant of $5,000 for the professional development of Ambulance Officers. The grant provides financial assistance to attend an overseas clinical conference or similar educational activity.
The conference or activity must be relevant to paramedic practice, pre-hospital care or emergency medicine or ambulance operations, and recipients must be able to demonstrate that their attendance will help them to meet a career development objective and contribute to the knowledge base of the Queensland Ambulance Service.
This grant will be made to any Ambulance Officer for a significant contribution to the promotion or development of clinical or operational practice in ambulance services.
The grant will provide financial assistance for conference registration, fares and accommodation to attend a conference or similar activity in the pre-hospital care or emergency medicine fields.
Note:
- The Regional Assistant Commissioner’s signature of approval is required on an application.
- This grant is subject to ministerial approval for overseas travel.
- The Foundation expects receipt of a copy of the international travel report required by the Department of Community Safety. The report will also be published on the departmental intranet (DESPortal) for access by all QAS personnel.
- The recipient is required to give a report of their educational experience at the annual KJM Patron’s Day Clinical Symposium.

Professional Development Grants
The Foundation also supports the professional development of Ambulance Officers by providing financial assistance to attend a conference or similar activity.

The grant will provide financial assistance to attend a conference or similar activity in the pre-hospital care or emergency medicine fields.

United Voice Outstanding Student of the Year Grant - $2,000 
This award is offered to encourage students to strive for excellence throughout their course.
A grant of $2,000 will be provided to assist the student to further studies, competencies, or ambulance knowledge in their subsequent 12 months of full time service.
The grant recipient is selected from nominations made by educators from Queensland Combined Emergency Services Academy School of Ambulance and Paramedic Studies (QCESA), Regional Staff Development officers and the student’s immediate supervisors.
The selection is made through a competitive assessment process by a panel chaired by the Education and Development Manager. All QAS officers who have graduated from their education program in the twelve months preceding the grant are eligible.
The winner of this grant will be a uniformed QAS student from a QAS educational program who has completed their program in the preceding 12 months, having demonstrated consistent outstanding performance throughout their studies.
Applicants must be nominated by QCESA School of Education Lutwyche Campus or the Regional Manager Staff Development through QCESA School of Education Lutwyche Campus.

General Administration
Grants are announced and arrangements advised for subsequent presentation at the annual Foundation Patron’s Day Gala Dinner.
The decision of the Foundation Committee Members shall be final in all matters relating to any grant.
All eligible QAS personnel are strongly encouraged to enter these prestigious and most worthy grants in the spirit of continuing the work carried out by Ambulance Officer Kenneth James McPherson DSM.
Caution
The Foundation reserves the right to alter procedures, guidelines or awards described herein at any time, should the need arise. Should it do so, the Foundation will modify these communications media and abide by its published criteria from a period no less than 14 days prior to the deadline for student submissions published annually.
